Flat Tailed Horned Lizard

Scientific Name:

Phrynosoma m'calli

Size:

3 to 4 3/4" long.

Coloring:

Dark brown to gray with a dark stripe down its back.

Range:

Southern California, Arizona, and Mexico

Habitat:

Areas of fine sand. Some have described known habitat as areas of little vegetation but it is often found in areas where Joshua trees and creosote bush grow.

Flat Tailed Horned Lizard Back

General Information:

Diurnal. Burrows into the sand in the heat of the day and will also burrow to stay warm in the cool of the night. Eats insects and is often found near ant holes on desert roads.
