Location: Just above the Inspection station, north of Barstow, from Interstate 15 to Las Vegas. Exit Minneola Rd. and follow the dirt road just beyond the gas station on the left side of the road. Do not use the road that leads to the early man site.
History: Yermo was originally named Otis after Harrison Gray Otis of the Los Angeles Times. It was founded in 1904 as a railroad station and gained a post office by 1908. At that time the name was changed to Yermo (Spanish for 'desert'). The graves shown on these pages are from the original graveyard located high on a narrow ridge outside of the town.

Just above the grave sites is the foundation to an old mill for processing ore and above the mill are numerous old mines including a shaft that goes straight through a hillside. I believe this shaft was used to transport ore using a line-bucket arrangement to above the mill for processing. There is evidence of several small mines beyond the mill, up the canyons above the site.

This view is looking toward the mill and the Interstate. The other end of the tunnel ends above a deep ravine. There is evidence of a cable system that might have been used to haul ore from here, to above the mill for processing. |
Please do not disturb the graves. May they rest in peace.
