| An Anticline is made up of folded rocks which have the shape of an arrowhead with the point aiming upward. The oldest rocks composing the anticline are the ones in the middle of the arrowhead. | ![]() |
The Syncline is just the opposite with the arrowhead pointing downward. The youngest rocks are now in the center. Think about the graphic where the top represents the younger formations and the ages of the rocks in each fold should be evident. |

This is an Anticline that can be seen in a road cut located just north of Ave. S on the Hwy. 14 in Palmdale, CA. This series of complex folds are the result of stress caused by the San Andreas fault which is located approximately 1/4 mile south. |
