The animation to the right, is a representation of a four-stamp, stamp mill. The rock ore
from the mine would be dropped down a bin located in the back of the stamp mill. The rock would drop under the stamps
and the pounding action of the heavy stamps would crush the ore into a very fine powder. From the stamps, the
rock powder would move onto mercury collection plates usually made of copper where the gold would come into contact
with the mercury where it would adhere and the rest of the powder would be washed away. |
