Bit Of History's CLAN ALPINE

Clan Alpine

Location: The turnoff is about 17.6 miles east of Middlegate. The original road ran from Cold Springs north but that road entrance has been closed off. Now continue on until you see a good graded gravel road to the left. This road goes to several ranches including the Alpine and Clan Alpine ranches. Both of these ranches are very old as can be determined by the buildings some of which are stone or adobe. Continue down the road for 5.6 miles to Clan Alpine road. Looking to the left, you will see the ruins of the old town located at the base of the hills. To get there, ask for permission at Clan Alpine ranch, they were very friendly. Drive through the gate and immediately turn right and cross Cherry Creek. Continue along this road following the creek up until you are across from the stone ruins. If you cross the creek here, there is an excellent parking place along side of the creek. Walk over to the ruins from here.

GPS: The coordinates for the parking area are 39º 32.22' x 117º 50.19'.

Parking Area

History: Clan Alpine was a small mining community that started in 1864. Two years later, the camp could boast of having a post office, cabins, and a 10 stamp mill along with the office of the Silver Lode Mining Company. The veins did not prove out and the mines were abandoned 2 years later. The mining equipment was moved to White Pine in 1869. A small farming community used the mill building during the 1870's and a small store, a physician, and a post office were opened during the early 1900's.

Town Site

There are several ruins of stone buildings scattered along the base of the hill here. It appears that part of the area has been graded lately possibly during the fire fighting (there was a fire along the creek at this location in the recent past). There are some can dumps and a ditch that may have carried water from higher up the creek, directly into the town site.
