A couple of the best books on general travel around the Barstow area of the Mojave desert are Bill Mann's series. He has spent roughly 50 years wandering around this desert region and his books are excellent guides to help you explore and identify sites that you find. Volume 1 covers Afton Canyon area, Barstow area, Black Canyon, Crucero, Yermo, and misc. other sites nearby. Volume 2 covers Newbury Springs, Baker, Shoshone - Tecopa, and Turquoise Mountain areas. Each guide lists 50 sites from mines and ghost towns to Indian and early immigrant sites. GPS coordinates are given along with mileage markers from point to point. These books are very good references for travel within the areas outlined.
