Here is where I get to ramble on about the things I see and the odds and ends that annoy me. So here goes.

  1. Take a look at what I call the "Shoe Tree". This old cottonwood is located on Hwy. 50 about 1 or 2 miles east of Middlegate (or West gate) east of Fallon, Nevada. How did this get started? The picture was taken in the fall of 2003. There were literally hundreds of pairs of old shoes that have been thrown into this tree. Definitely a conversation piece! Shoe Tree
  2. Why do so many people want to dump their trash in the desert? I suspect that a large percentage of people don't want to pay the high costs associated with going to the county dump. When I was in Arizona, the dump fees were minimal or non-existent and there was very little trash dumped in the countryside. This would lead one to conclude that the counties of California don't really care about the desert environment but do care about making money. What a surprise!
  3. What is the giant "vent pipe" connected to that is located 6 or 7 miles east of the Sheephole Mountains outside of Twenty Nine Palms, CA. This area was criss-crossed by General Patten during WWII...does it have something to do with that? This thing stands about 10 feet high out in the middle of the sand. I stumbled on to it by accident years ago. Being a bit curious, I threw a pebble into the opening. No one came running out to get me but...
